'Human Landscapes from My Country' by Nazım Hikmet

William Armstrong - william.armstrong@hdn.com.tr

‘Human Landscapes from My Country’ by Nazım Hikmet, translated by Randy Blasing & Mutlu Konuk
(Persea Books, 2009, $20, pp 466)

During Nazım Hikmet’s long stay in jail from 1938 to 1950, he not only composed the whole of his epic poem “Human Landscapes from My Country,” but also translated Leo Tolstoy’s “War and Peace” into Turkish. That he chose to translate Tolstoy’s great work is perhaps surprising - although Hikmet respected the “grand old man,” his own work reflected very different assumptions about human agency. While Tolstoy’s epic is shaped by his understanding of man’s essential helplessness in the face of the turning wheel of history, such a vision is anathema to Hikmet. Like all of his work, “Human Landscapes…” is shot through with the optimistic conviction that human beings have the capacity to forge their own path upwards by sheer force of their own will. More than the Achilles heel of his communism, it is perhaps this generosity of spirit that forms the guiding philosophy across his oeuvre. As a student in the poem reflects at one point, “giving up hope in humanity” is little more than “after-dinner philosophizing.”

The first two books of the poem follow parallel rail journeys heading into Anatolia from Istanbul’s Haydarpaşa Station in 1941, the trains becoming symbolic microcosms of Turkey’s “human landscape.” Book three is set in a prison in the middle of the Anatolian steppe, while books four and five are more experimental, casting the net out even further and cutting between scenes across time and space. All are portrayed through the eyes of the various characters – from the top to the bottom of the social spectrum - but expressed through Hikmet’s own inimitably direct poetic style. As a pasha’s grandson and an Istanbul intellectual, he had no real sustained contact with ordinary Anatolian peasants, but in jail he was able to marinade himself in the “true” peasant vernacular. “Human Landscapes…” is therefore filled with real life models from Bursa Prison, which is probably why they are drawn with such vividness.

In the poem, Hikmet takes the traditional oral epic form and adapts it to the modern condition by using elements of drama, film and the novel. This makes it a doubly difficult task for the translator to be alive to every subtle contour, and Mutlu Konak, who recently wrote an excellent biography of Hikmet, does a miraculous job here. In her introduction, she suggests that Hikmet chose to write it as poetry “not for self-protection or to distance himself from his material,” but rather because “poetry was more economical: it could say so much more so much faster than prose.” This becomes clear on reading; “Human Landscapes” spreads across 17,000 iron-forged lines, but it is extraordinarily efficient, never wasting a single word.

The whole thing effectively amounts to a compendium of Anatolia’s collective memories, traumas, hopes and fears at the time of the Second World War. At one point towards the beginning of the first train journey, the narrative looks back in the direction from which it has come:

“The train rounds a bend.
The rest of the cars appear
one by one,
 all tied to one another
     far into the distance
It comes as a surprise
to be tied to things so far back.”

It’s a key passage, with a poignancy that Hikmet was surely aware of. The “romantic communist” believed ardently that men could shape and improve their own destiny, but he was also temperamentally allergic to the constraints of rigid ideology. For all his unswerving loyalty to the idea of forging ahead into the bright future, he knew that, as Marx himself wrote, “the dead generations weigh like a nightmare on the brains of the living.”

Technology a ‘work of art’ at the ‘Haunted Mansion’

ISTANBUL /hürriyet daily news

To coincide with the Istanbul Biennial, Borusan Contemporary presents two exhibitions at its museum ‘Perili Köşk’ (Haunted Mansion). Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s show ‘Vicious Circular Breathing’ and Segment #4, a selection from the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection, are on display

Borusan Contemporary presents two exhibitions at its museum office “Perili Köşk” (Haunted Mansion), parallel to the 13th Istanbul Biennial. Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s solo show, entitled “Vicious Circular Breathing and Segment #4,” a selection from the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection, is currently on display.

Internationally acclaimed artist Lozano-Hemmer’s exhibition aims to explore the very personal, emotionally evocative nature of his work that has been produced with technologies both high and low including biometric sensors, projection, custom software, and motorized mechanics, not to mention air, paper bags and people. His work “Vicious Circular Breathing,” from which the exhibition takes its name, is a special new work commissioned by the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection that is being presented for the first time as part of this solo exhibition.

Several of Lozano-Hemmer’s installations include the use of particular words and sentences to add additional meaning to the installation. These texts are used to elaborate on a deeper meaning that involves the viewer and their actions in order to affect the atmosphere and perception. Some of the text based installations, such as “Third Person” and “Subtitled Public,” place words upon the subject itself. The random nature of the texts leaves the viewer with a sense of helplessness, as they have no control over what they are labeled as, so they experience the pleasant and not-so-pleasant connotations that are associated with the words placed upon them. The text based installations such as “33 Questions Per Minute” and “There is No Business Like No Business” are reliant upon the viewer’s will to participate.

One of the things separating Lozano-Hemmer from most artists is his comprehensive use of technology. Most of his works contain more than one element of technology to create the lasting effect that has made his work so famous. Some of the technology he uses includes: robotics, custom software, projections, internet links, cell phones, sensors, LEDs, cameras, and tracking systems.
Lozano-Hemmer recognizes that western culture is technology-based, emphasizing that “even if you are not using a computer you are affected by this environment. Working with technology is inevitable.”
Ever since the industrial revolution, technology has been used to more efficiently communicate and create art. Lozano-Hemmer has simply taken it upon himself to extend the use of audio visual media in order to incorporate surveillance of his viewers into his work consequently, creating grand displays that are etched in the memories of many – even though the installations are only temporary.

As an electronic artist, Lozano-Hemmer develops interactive installations that are at the intersection of architecture and performance art. His main interest is in creating platforms for public participation, particularly by using technologies such as robotics, computerized surveillance or telematic networks non-traditionally. Inspired by phantasmagoria, carnival and animatronics, his light and shadow works are “anti-monuments for alien agency”.

His large-scale interactive installations have been commissioned for events such as the Millennium Celebrations in Mexico City (1999), the Cultural Capital of Europe in Rotterdam (2001), the UN World Summit of Cities in Lyon (2003), the opening of the YCAM Center in Japan (2003), the Expansion of the European Union in Dublin (2004), the memorial for the Tlatelolco Student Massacre in Mexico City (2008), the 50th Anniversary of the Guggenheim Museum in New York (2009) and the Winter Olympics in Vancouver (2010).

Segment #4

Alongside Lozano-Hemmer’s solo show, “Segment #4” consists of a diverse selection of works from the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection, uniquely open to the public for viewing in the office spaces of Perili Köşk. It includes works by artists such as Ali Kazma, Erwin Redl and Paul Schwer.

Another site-specific installation that looks set to draw particular attention is “Meandering” by Austrian artist Erwin Redl. This work consists of LED light panels that surround the stairwells of the building.

Another new large scale public installation that will become part of the collection, also being shown at the same time, is a light and video work entitled “Our Dreams Remain Our Dreams,” created by the French artist Thierry Dreyfus. For this commissioned work, Dreyfus has the intention of “turning the building away from its first likeness, then revealing its dreams and offering its intimate personality.” The artist shot and edited a video that will appear under the balconies of the Perili Köşk façade.

Parallel to the biennial site, carefully-chosen installations will continue to bring dynamic contemporary art to Istanbul until Feb. 16. The exhibitions at the biennial sit are open until Oct. 20.

Greek-American director Chyrsovalantis Stamelos, who left New York and moved to İzmir in early 2010, has shot a documentary about the city. The film titled “Hello Anatolia” will be premiered on Oct. 4 in New York.

Speaking about his documentary, Stamelos said that he titled it “Hello Anatolia” because the meaning of “hello” was about starting “new relationships with a fresh mind.“

“Most of people I know had nothing to do with the negative events that have occurred between Greece and Turkey. And at the end of the day, I and the viewer just see ourselves as human beings. So, the greeting we give to each other should be a simple and friendly ‘hello’.”

Stamelos said that once he had moved to İzmir, he had time to conduct research on his new city, and continued: “In İzmir, I discovered so many old Greeks, Jewish, Ottoman, Levantine artifacts and houses. It was astounding. So right away, I knew I had to develop my journey into a story. So we can say that the pre-production began in 2010, and production took place between 2011 and 2013.”

As for his family roots, Stemalos said, “Going back to my mother’s great-grandparents, her entire family comes from Smyrna. They held a Turkish-Greek name ‘Aslanis’. They were talking about Çeşme, Alaçatı and İzmir. It wasn’t simply a place but it was a personality. When they started living in Greece, they were called ‘Çeşmelides’, meaning ‘women of Çeşme’.”
