The relationship of mathematics and art was recognized thousands of years ago, from the Early Bronze Age onwards, whether one is talking about the Egyptian pyramids, or the Greeks with their golden ratio. But mathematics played and continues to play a special role in Islamic art and architecture.

After Germans, excavations will be carried out by a Turkish team for the first time in the ancient city of Troy.
New term excavations in the 5,000-year-old ancient city of Troy, which is located within the borders of the Tevfikiye village in the northwestern province of Çanakkale, will be carried out by a Turkish team for the first time. Under the auspices of Tübingen University, German archaeologists have so far worked in the ancient city with the sponsorship of German companies.

A sponsorship agreement was signed on March 11 between the Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (ÇOMÜ) and a company working in the iron, steel and energy field.  In the signing ceremony, ÇOMÜ rector Professor Sedar Laçiner said a Turkish team would work in the Troy excavations for the first time, and it was a historic time to sign the agreement. He said the decision was made last year for ÇOMÜ to carry out the excavations, adding, “There was previously a small budget for the excavations.

From now on, the process will be accelerated with the budget of the Culture and Tourism Ministry, and contributions of the university and Turkish industrialists and businessmen. Our goal is to extend the excavations process to 12 months. Pieces unearthed in Troy will contribute to Çanakkale’s culture and tourism. Maybe it will become one of Turkey’s most important frequented historical places.”

Excavations in the ancient city will be led by Associate Professor Rüstem Aslan, the head of ÇOMÜ’s Archaeology Department.

‘The Rise of Turkey: The 21st Century’s First Muslim Power,’ by Soner Çağaptay

William ARMSTRONG - william.armstrong@hdn.com.tr -  hürriyet daily news

‘The Rise of Turkey: The Twenty-First Century’s First Muslim Power’ by Soner Çağaptay (Potomac Books, $26, 192 pages)

In 2006, the BBC’s former Turkey correspondent Chris Morris published a slim book called “The New Turkey.” It focused on the major changes underway in the country and was intended as a nudge in the ribs of the European Union to accept its new negotiator into the fold. Almost eight years have passed, but the optimism of Soner Çağaptay’s “The Rise of Turkey” is very reminiscent of Morris’ book.

Culture village to be dedicated to Rumi

KONYA - Doğan News Agency

The Rumi Culture Village will be established in Rumi’s hometown Konya’s Sarayönü district. The village aims to introduce Rumi at all points.
The Rumi Culture Village will be established in Rumi’s hometown Konya’s Sarayönü district. The village aims to introduce Rumi at all points.
The life and works of Mevlana Jalal ad-din Rumi, the 13th century poet and mystic, are set to be showcased in a new cultural center to be established in his hometown, the central Anatolian province of Konya’s Sarayönü district.

As well as Sufi music and fine arts courses, Ottoman, Arabic and Persian language courses will be opened at the Rumi Culture Village and Rumi will be presented from different angles in Turkish and English, according to Esin Çelebi Bayru, the International Rumi Foundation’s deputy president. She also said works by Rumi would be performed in the village.

Bayru said the village project was waiting for the approval of the Development Ministry and would go ahead once it was given the green light.

“People from all around the world will be able to come to the culture village and take classes there. We want these classes to be easily followed on the Internet. As well as Ottoman, Persian and Arabic language courses, there will also be Sufi music and courses in fine arts. There must be rules and convention courses in the village, too. Because people are unhappy and uneasy, they lose their own customs. We plan to carry out this project with the metropolitan municipality and universities in the city.” Bayru said.

She added they had also prepared a project for children, adding, “The ‘My Rumi’ project will teach children about Rumi. We will try to teach about him from their viewpoint. This project includes a theater play and books.”

Bayru said Rumi and his family immigrated from Karaman to Konya on May 3, 1228, and they were also planning to organize a march from Karaman to Konya on the same day. She said the four-day march would not be an ordinary one, but would take place at the international level including talks and meetings.

“We also plan to organize a theater festival for children in May. On Sept. 30, 2013, the birthday of Rumi, a mystic music festival was successfully held in Konya. This is why we are thinking of creating a platform for artists to stage performances about Rumi,” she added.
